1972 VW Squareback August of 1963 saw the introduction of the Volkswagen Variant, or Squareback. The second model of the Type 3's was powered by a 1500cc flat-4 engine, which produced 54hp. 1965 brought more power to the Squareback with the introduction of a 1600cc motor. This engine produced 65hp, and brought the top speed to a record breaking 84mph. In 1968, Bosch electronic fuel injection was introduced as an option, which became standard in 1970. 1970 also found minor interior and exterior changes. A 1972 Squareback with a 4 speed manual transmission was able to speed from 0 to 60 in 17.7 seconds. The ¼ mile flew by in a measly 20.9 seconds.
Contrary to popular belief, this was not my first car. Technically, my first car was a 1974 Datsun 510 wagon, but since I didn't have my license, or my permit, I never got to drive it. My mom refused to let my dad, or me for that matter, keep the car. So, a week after the catalytic converter burned out, he sold it and broke-even on the deal. The countless VW's my brother Chris had owned really made an impression on me. So, after the 510 wagon was gone, we searched for a VW Squareback. There was only one major problem. I didn't know how to drive a stick. Every Squareback we looked at was a stick. We happened to find a Squareback in Sacramento that had a siezed engine, and and automatic transmission. Towing that $500 car home was one of the best days of my life. Our family friend Whit, who was a certified VW nut, agreed to rebuild the motor for us. It came with one condition though. I had to clean all of the engine tin before the motor came back, and I had to help put the engine back in the car. Not my interior as you can tell by the blue dashboard, but similar
Now with Fuel Injection! What a joke. In retrospect, this was one of those cars I wish I had never gotten rid of. Even though the fuel injection system was junk, and often times the car would only run on two cylinders, it was still a fun car. The reason I sold it was because it just wasn't reliable. I had parked it for a couple of days because it was running on two cylinders again, and I had gotten fed up with it. I went to go start it up, and it just wouldn't start. So, we sold it. The guy who bought it from us worked on it in the front yard, and found the reason why it was running on two cylinders. It was because the wires to the fuel injectors had fallen apart, and so they weren't firing. He also found the reason it wouldn't start was because of a pinched fuel line. Stupid me. I sold it because I didn't want to spend 30 minutes to fix two simple problems.
