| 1,100 miles, 4 days, 2 sore butts, & 1 $200 picture |
| Day 1: Fremont to Redding. ~232 miles. Here's the route we took. Not very fun, but we were short on time. Kim and I both had to work on Friday, so we just took Hwy 5 up to Redding. |
No pics from this gem of a ride, but here's a shot of the bike before we left. |
Day 2: Redding to Crater Lake, then to Medford. ~278 Miles. Here's the route: Hwy 5 north to Weed (no I didn't purchase any), then to Hwy 97. 18 miles outside of Klammath Falls turn west onto Hwy 62. 62 Eventually runs into Medford. |
Leaving Redding, beautiful skies. |
Mt. Shasta |
North of Redding, Hwy 5 is very scenic. It actually had some turns too. This is from a vista point. |
Yay! Oregon put up a sign specifically to welcome ME! |
Upper Klammath Lake from the dock at Klammath Falls. Cool town. |
Missing Volcano you say? |
Sure enough, it's not there. |
This is a turnout on Highway 62. If you ever get the chance, this is a great road. The picture speaks for itself. |
Valley carved by the Annie River I think it was called. |
A small waterfall on the Annie River. |
Crater Lake. For those who don't know, this used to be a huge volcano. It collapsed, and a tiny volcano formed inside of the caldera. The tiny volcano is the little island in the middle of the lake. It's called Wizard Island. |
A new tradition started on our first trip, here's a shot of ourselves taken by yours truely. |
Remeber I said Highway 62 was a great road? Yeah, I lied. It's a great road from 97 to Crater Lake. Beyond Crater Lake they were doing "construction". More like destruction. It was 8 miles from the entrance of Crater Lake to the 62/230 split. In those 8 miles, maybe 4 of them were paved. And when I say paved, I mean asphault covered in gravel. Also, incase you're wondering, no, Metzeler Z6's make horrible off road tires. |
I stopped right after the last bit of gravel roadway to rest. I was kind of stressed out. These guys all stopped too.. |
A random vista point stop yielded this gem. I'm pretty sure this was Castle Creek. |
Same stop, just a little further down the path. |
Just checking to see if motorcyclists pee in the woods. Yep, they do. |
Day 3: Medford to Oregon Caves National Monument, then on to Arcata, Ca. ~225 Miles Highway 5 to 199 just outside of Grant's Pass. 199 to Cave Junction and onto 46. 46 doesn't connect to anything, so once you reach the end (Oregon Caves), it's another 19 miles back to 199. 199 eventually runs into 101. |
If you're ever in Oregon, YOU'VE GOT TO GO TO OREGON CAVES!!! The caves are cool, but the ride on 46 is the best. It's one of the most fun roads I've ridden in a long time. Once you get to the end, there's a small visitor chataeu, and this neat little natural waterfall and pool. |
Another new tradition. Me in some sort of hat. I'm a spelunker. |
These caves were discovered in 1874 by some dude trying to shoot a bear for food. |
Stalactites hang from the ceiling. Stalagmites are on the ground. |
Graffitti from the late 1800's and early 1900's. They tried to remove it, but it had already been varnished by a fresh coat of flowstone.. |
This is called Angel Falls. It's what untouched calcite really looks like. |
Believe it or not, this is a shot from right off of Highway 101. Yes, it too has more spectacular views than that of Mountain View and Redwood City. |
Ahhh, the $200 picture. Why do I call it that? I stopped to get a shot, Kim jumped off the back, I put the kickstand down, leaned the bike over, and whoops, I forgot to put the kickstand down. Over she went in slow motion. Only damage was a broken hero blob, a severely bent clutch lever, and scratched side, upper, and mirror. Probably cost me about $200 to fix it all. |
The beautiful California coast. This was right around Crescent City. |
Live 105? Yeah, that sucks in comparison to Elk Info Radio, 1610 AM. All elk info, all the time. |
Holy crap, it's elk. I should have listened to the radio, so I wouldn't have needed to come to a screeching halt when I saw the elk on the side of the road. |
Day 4: Arcata to Fremont. ~360 miles The original route was to go further south down Highway 1, and take Skaggs Rd back to 101. However, I had forgotten that the California coast is bite ass cold in the summer time, so after we had lunch at Fort Bragg, I took 20 back to 101 and hauled it home.. |
I was pretty tired, so I didn't really stop to take many pictures on this day. But we did stop in a cool little town called Leggett. It's where Highway 1 ends and joins up with 101. They've got a drive thru tree. Since I've never driven through a tree before, I had to stop. |
At the drive thru tree place, this cool contraption was there. It's mated to a 1984 Goldwing Standard. |
Sure it looks cool now, but it's not so cool when your stuck behind it on one of the twistiest parts of Highway 1, and they're going 18 miles per hour. |
Another shot of the drive thru tree. |
Had to take it for obvious reasons. And in answer to your question, no, Wilit is not from Willits. |
