1988 Ranger GT Ad (Courtesy of Ford) In mid-1986, Ford decided to spice things up in the Ranger line-up. The trend of the day was small sporty trucks, so Ford decided to offer up the buying public a little something special from the factory. The GT option included a 2.9 Litre V6, 5 speed manual transmission, 14 inch "premium wheels", bucket seats, with the driver seat fully powered, and a ground effects kit to make the truck look sportier. Sadly though, the GT option only lasted until 1989.
This Ranger had quite a storried history. As the legend goes, Remy's older brother Bruce was driving around the streets of Tracy on his Ninja 900. He had stopped at a red light, when the owner of a 1988 Ranger GT pulled up next to him. He began to strike up a conversation with Bruce, and then challenged him to a drag race, with the pink slips as the prize (yeah, I didn't know people really raced for pinks either). Anyway, Bruce agreed, and they shook hands on the deal. THe light turned green, and of course, the Ranger didn't stand a chance. Both pulled over 1/4 mile from where they had started, the owner of the truck signed over the pink slip, and even helped Bruce load his motorcycle into the bed of the truck. Bruce later sold the truck to his younger sister Janelle, who later sold it to her younger brother Remy. Where it enjoyed many fruitfull years of service. 1988 Ranger GT (not mine but similar)
2.9 Litre V6. One day when Remy was coming home to Tracy to visit, he was driving over the Grapevine when the transmission had finally given out. He had towed it to his parents house, and it sat in their driveway for many months. I later bought the truck from him for $900 where it sat in my garage for many more months. I had actually tried to fix it, and had even bought a used transmission for $800, but it turned out it was the wrong tranny. I searched and searched, but couldn't find a decent used transmission for less than $1500. Short on cash, patience, and time, I sold the truck to a junkyard for $50. Another fine investment on my part.
