1968 brought subtle changes to the now 3 year old Mustang. Exterior and Interior designs were still very similar to the 1967 model, except for minor differences. On the outside, the '67's quarter vents were exchanged for a more simple chrome strip. The front mustang corral had lost its horizontal chrome bars running the length of the grill. The side "Mustang" lettering had changed from block to script, and the gas cap had also been revised. Interior wise, the Mustang remained virtually unchanged. 1967 had seen the intoduction of the 390 big block motor, which continued through the '69 model year, and 1968 saw the intoduction of the famed 428 Cobra Jet. 1968 was also the introduction of the 302, which would be installed in Ford passenger cars for the next 30 years. | ||
| Like my Volkswagen fetish spawned by my brother Chris, I believe my Mustang addiction was helped along by my brother John. In high school, John had owned a couple of Mustangs, one of which has been the butt of many a family joke for years. This being my first Mustang, I think it was also my most cherished. Though it wasn't any rare model, or have a fire breathing big block, it was my first V8, and also the first car I could actually spend money on now that I had a high paying job at Wal-Mart. I had found the car in a classified ad in the Tracy Press. I called the guy, and was the first person to look at it. I told him I wanted it, and would be back later with my financial advisor (dad) and financing president (mom). It took some convincing to prove that I was responsible enough to handle the 205 hp of the V8. In the end, we payed the guy his asking price of $1,350, and the car was mine. |

| The car had 225,000 miles on it when I bought it from the second owner, and still ran like a champ. The feature I was most proud of, the air conditioning, didn't even work. But it had the potential to, and that's all that mattered. The first thing I did when I got the car was take it to the muffler shop and get the old rusting exhaust system cut away, and install dual exhaust with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Shortly after this, Bryan bought a '69 coupe with a 351, and Remy bought his brother's '69 coupe with a built 302. I say they were both trying to copy me, but they say otherwise. Sadly, the Mustang met an untimely fate. Driving back to work from my lunch break, a woman in a '76 Suburban ran a red light and totaled my Mustang. Though saddened with the loss of my first Mustang, the insurance company made it all up to me, by paying me $3,400 for my loss. Not bad considering I only payed $1,350 for the car, and only had maybe $400 invested in it. | |||
