2003 GT Convertible The Mustang has had three distinct platforms throughout it's 40 year history. The 1965-1973 Falcon based cars, the 1974-1978 Pinto based cars, and the 1979-2004 Fox Platform cars. Within the '65-'73 range, those body styles can be broken down even futher into the '65-'66, '67-'68, '69-'70, and the '71-'73 cars. Most Mustang enthusiasts don't like to associate the '71-'73 cars with the '65-'70's because of their "aircraft carrier" size, but I feel they are the sleekest, most aerodynamic Mustangs produced. Then we come to the '74-'78 cars. Most Mustang enthusiasts don't even like to refer to these years as Mustangs, but more as glorified Pintos. But what most people forget about these cars is, they not only came with V8's (though largely restricted thanks to new smog laws), but they were also the lightest Mustangs ever built. The '79-'04 models can be broken down much like the '65-'73 models. These years were '79-'86, '87-'93, '94-'95, '96-'98, and the '99-'04 models, all of which were based on the 1978 Fairmont (Fox) platform. The new 2005 Mustang is set to be built on the LS platform, which is shared by the Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type.
This is the 4th Mustang I've owned. It's also the most well optioned car (sad I know) I've owned. I also have to say it's one of the most fun to drive, though it doesn't handle nearly as well as my SVO, and definately nowhere near the Neon. I plan on adding a strut tower brace, lower engine brace, and sub-frame connectors to help eliminate some of the "wet noodle" handling characteristics. I'm still trying to decide on whether to use the Kenny Brown matrix sub-frames, or the Evolution Motorsports "X" brace. Mustang GT Interior
4.6 Litre Before Modifications Driveline wise, I'm definately going to install headers, though I haven't decided between the smog legals JBA's or the non-smog legal Bassani mid-lengths. Regardless of what I pick, I have decided to run a Bassani X-pipe (with cats), and MAC cat-back for that nice old-school V8 gurgling sound. For now, I'm going to stick with the basic bolt-on's, i.e. aluminum driveshaft, underdrive pullies, short throw shifter, etc. However I'm still trying to justify to myself I need a Kenne Bell supercharger to make up for the fact I didn't get a Cobra. My two next modifications will be H&R lowering springs to get rid of that 4x4 look, and 3.73 gears to help with the acceleration.
